  1. Bristol restrospective
  2. 4 Mar 2007 at 7:49am
pThe Bristol mapping party was a week ago now, and we collected some great data:/p pa href="http://www.opengeodata.org/images/2007/bristol/bristol-traces.jpg"img src="http://www.opengeodata.org/images/2007/bristol/bristol-traces.jpg" border="0"/a/p pWe were at the a href="http://www.watershed.co.uk/cgi-bin/WebObjects/Watershed.woa/"Watershed/a and had about 40 people turn up in all. We almost ran out of GPS units despite the rain, and some good social events happened on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A href="http://www.lorp.org/"Laurence/a and I did an interview you can here a href="http://www.opengeodata.org/images/2007/bristol/20070224_Radio_Bristol_OSM_Nancy _Jackson.mp3"here/a with the local radio station. All in all a good weekend!/p pThanks very much to all who helped. /p

  3. Blogging and podcasting in Bristol

I will post the notes I made for the day as well later once I've updated them with a few screenshots./p pa href="http://joedale.typepad.com/integrating_ict_into_the_/files/Bristol_podcasting_w orkshop.mp3"Download Bristol_podcasting_workshop.mp3/a/p pa href="http://joedale.typepad.com/Bristol_blogging_workshop.mp3"Download Bristol_blogging_workshop.mp3/a /p pThe three hour morning and afternoon workshops took place at a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14969299@N00/1697639933/in/set-72157602623142361/" The Graduate School of Education in Berkeley Square/a and involved around fifteen trainee teachers in each. Setting up the laptops with microphone headsets and a href="http://audacity.sourceforge.net/"Audacity/a pre-installed took a matter of minutes and we were ready for our hour and a half of podcast training./p pThe written notes seem to come in handy as I explained the step by step process needed to produce an audio file in mp3 format, upload it to the internet and allow others to subscribe to it through a href="http://www.apple.com/itunes/"iTunes/a. /p pa href="http://joedale.typepad.com/integrating_ict_into_the_/files/Bristol_podcasting_w orkshop.mp3"/a/p pAs you can hear in the examples they produced on the day, the students have understood very well the basics of podcasting, but are still working on issues such as the distance their mouth is from the microphone to avoid distortion or to speak loudly enough to be heard clearly over the music track./p pa href="http://joedale.typepad.com/integrating_ict_into_the_/files/Bristol_MFL_PGCE_Pod casts.mp3"Download Bristol_MFL_PGCE_Podcasts.mp3/a /p pAfter a fifteen minute break, it was time for the blogging workshop to begin and I showed them how easy it was to set up a a href="http://www.sixapart.com/uk/typepad/"TypePad blog/a, to moderate comments and publish their podcast and so anyone could listen to it whenever or however they wanted. As you will hear from their feedback, the trainees realised the exciting potential of blogs and podcasts for producing personalised resources for their pupils, but felt they needed more time to refine the skills they had learnt already which was fair comment, I thought./p pa href="http://joedale.typepad.com/integrating_ict_into_the_/files/Bristol_podcasting_w orkshop.mp3"/a/p pa href="http://joedale.typepad.com/integrating_ict_into_the_/files/Bristol_Feedback.mp3 "Download Bristol_Feedback.mp3/a /p pimg title="Bristol_mfl_pgce_blogging_and_podca" alt="Bristol_mfl_pgce_blogging_and_podca" src="http://joedale.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/10/27/bristol_mfl_pgce_blog ging_and_podca.jpg" border="0"/img/p pThe atmosphere throughout the whole day was relaxed and informal and all the trainees rose to the challenge with aplomb. On a personal note, I was delighted to return to Bristol having spoken about the learning benefits of blogging and podcasting earlier this year and train colleagues on how to actually do it. I hope you find the training useful too and it helps you to have a go. /p pDon't forget all you need is a computer, microphone, internet connection and VISA card (if you want to subscribe to a href="http://www.sixapart.com/uk/typepad/"TypePad/a) to get started. See picture below for further clarification. Easy./p pimg title="Bristol_mfl_pgce_blogging_and_pod_3" alt="Bristol_mfl_pgce_blogging_and_pod_3" src="http://joedale.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/10/27/bristol_mfl_pgce_blog ging_and_pod_3.jpg" border="0"/img /p
